| Poverty is a grinding condition that affects every aspect of a person’s life. What might be a minor setback for someone of moderate means can be devastating for a person living in poverty. Agape Financial of Northwest Michigan, a nonprofit, faith-based organization formed in 2009, seeks to assist those individuals and families by giving them tools to help themselves through: • Financial mentoring • Advocacy with creditors • Affordable microloans |

This unique program is effective because it involves those it serves in the running of the organization. The board of directors is composed entirely of people living in poverty, empowering them to become leaders by assuming responsibility for guiding the organization and providing peer-to-peer relationships. Five volunteer advisors, including a banker, attorney, and CPA, attend all board meetings but have no vote. |
